Abbot Hall Art Gallery

The Gallery is housed in one of Kendal's most important buildings, a Grade I listed villa, on the banks of the River Kent. The galleries offer two floors of light-filled spaces in which to see art.

Abbot Hall has a comprehensive collection of George Romney's work. His paintings are hung in the elegant historical settings for which they were painted, amongst fine 18th-century furniture and porcelain.

Abbot Hall has also secured some spectacular long-term loans, including works by Constable, L. S. Lowry and Lucian Freud.

As well as a fine permanent collection, Abbot Hall is acknowledged as having one of the most imaginative and independently minded temporary exhibition programmes outside London.

Blackwell is one of Britain’s finest houses from the turn of the last century. Designed by M H Baillie Scott, as a holiday retreat for Sir Edward Holt, a wealthy Manchester brewery owner Blackwell survives in a truly remarkable state of preservation retaining many original decorative features. The period rooms are carefully furnished with the blend of Arts and Crafts furniture and early country-made pieces advocated by Baillie Scott, containing furniture and objects by many of the leading Arts & Crafts designers and studios – furniture by Morris & Co and Voysey, metalwork by W A S Benson and ceramics by Ruskin Pottery and William de Morgan.

Visitors are encouraged to sit and soak up the atmosphere in Blackwell’s fireplace inglenooks and are free to enjoy the house as it was originally intended, without roped-off areas. The inviting window and garden seats offer stunning views of the surrounding Lakeland scenery.

Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens

Dalemain Near Ullswater, on the Northern fringes of the Lake District, Dalemain is a real treasure. The fantastic Lake District historic house and gardens contains behind its Georgian facade, a wealth of Tudor and Medieval rooms and buildings. There has been a settlement at Dalemain since Saxon times, when a fortified pele tower is mentioned and the present day courtyard is testimony to the defensive nature of the hamlet surrounding that tower.

The Old Hall was added in the 14th century. In the 16th century, two projecting wings were added creating a typical Elizabethan manor house and in 1744, the impressive Georgian front was constructed to enclose an inner courtyard. Very little change has been made to the buildings since these times, and Dalemain remains a very special Lake District Historic House and gardens.

Jennings Brewery was originally established as a true family concern back in 1828, in the village of Lorton. The company moved to its current location in 1874, in the historic market town of Cockermouth.

Pure Lakeland water is still used for brewing, drawn from the brewery’s own well and only the finest natural ingredients are added – malt made from Maris Otter barley, Golding hops from Kent and Fuggles hops from Herefordshire.

Find out how our real ales are still brewed with care and attention, by taking our friendly guided tour of the brewery. Your tour will be completed in the best possible way, sampling some of Jennings’ superb Lakeland ales in the atmospheric bar, The Old Cooperage.
